The Northern Lights

by Ryan on June 6, 2010

The Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis are a spectacular light phenomenon found in the northern parts of Scotland, this is the best time to see them as we are now in the middle of a solar cycle peak, which started in 2009 and will run through to 2012.

When I was a boy, my uncle had a cottage on the Moray Firth and we would sit out late watching for the lights, I was privileged to experience this amazing site on a few occasions. Although not on the same scale as in these photos, it was still an experience I doubt I’ll ever forget.

One of best places to see the Aurora is the far north of Scotland, with the same latitude as Moscow and Stavenger but much more easily accessible. Also with the added advantage of Northern Latitude and the complete absence of street lights, you will have an excellent chance to see one of the worlds most magnificent natural phenomenon.

I had no idea that Scotland (or any place in the UK) had the Northern lights. I always thought of them as much farther north…but I suppose Scotland is pretty far north. I learned something new today, thanks Ryan!

Gosh, I never knew you could see the Northern Lights from Britain! I have always wanted to see them and thought I would have to travel to Scandinavia or Alaska to see them. And I didn't know about solar flare cycles either. Very interesting!

You are right, you cannot put something like this on the wall, it has to be experienced by the brain at the place. Your article and pictures came as close as possible to a personal impression. Thank you very much.
