by Ryan on December 16, 2010

The giveaway is now closed, congrats to the lucky winner Jean from jean-livingsimple.blogspot.com

‘Tis the season to be jolly fa la la la la la la la la, with Christmas fast approaching I’m pleased to announce that Scotland Here And Now has teamed up with Black & White Publishing for a great book giveaway. Located in Edinburgh B&W Publishing produce a wide range of bestselling titles with a distinctly Scottish edge. A big thank you to Jaane for being so helpful and supportive, it would be fantastic if you could visit their website just click on the link in the top right corner of my blog.

bigTheFamiliar179 The Familiar Book giveaway
I have a copy of ‘The Familiar’ by Scots author Roddy Phillips to giveaway. The Familiar – A Life in Weekly Instalments is the first collection of some of Roddy’s finest work about his life, his artist-wife Catriona Millar and their family’s daily exploits – including the mouse that should have known better, the dire consequences of yoga, the perils of swimming, the bird in the bedroom and what happens when you navigate by emotional intelligence rather than SatNav.

Beautifully written, acutely observed and always amusing, The Familiar has something for everyone.

If you would like a chance to win then entry to the giveaway couldn’t be simpler, in the comments section just tell us the name and a wee bit about your all time favorite book.

The giveaway will close on the 22nd of December and is open worldwide, I’ll announce the winner on Christmas Eve and contact them to get a postal address. How will I pick the winner?

Easy, all names will be placed in a hat and the first one that my 5 year old son Stephen pulls out wins.

So tell us what’s your fav book and why, good luck everyone.

There are so many books that I love that it is very difficult to choose one, but one of the ones that first come to my mind is "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe" by Fannie Flagg. I like it because she has such a unique way of capturing the characters and because she was able to make me laugh and cry in the same book.

I clicked the link for you too! :-)

Jean December 16, 2010 at 2:31 am

OK…it is hard to choose one favorite book…The Da Vince Code by Dan Brown is my "recent" fave.
Cool contest!

Bridewell December 16, 2010 at 2:49 am

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier….Spy, or anything else by John Le Carre….:)
I really miss the 'Cold War' years…..LOL!!!!!

Ryan December 16, 2010 at 3:05 am

Hi Daisy, it is hard to choose just one book especially for such a big book lover as yourself.
Hey Jean, I enjoyed The DaVinci Code aswell.
I bet you do Bridewell lol.

Mike December 16, 2010 at 3:39 am

Building a Website for Dummies is my most recent purchase. You didn't say we had to read the book. Correct?

I have tons of books in my collection. See the wife is just a wee little, round thing. So, I stack the books like a stairway. It helps her reach the top shelf. That's where I keep the Scotch. It's fairly expensive in this part of the world.

If I win this contest, I'll save you the postage (and I do want to win), instead of you mailing it, read it to the five year old son. Then his book report could be a blog entry. I'd like that a lot more than seeing my bride getting taller than me.

iamjenai December 16, 2010 at 5:06 am

Nice one David.
Lord of the rings is too much hard work for me Jenai well done.

FishHawk December 16, 2010 at 12:35 pm

If it is written in Scottish, does it come with a translator (preferably a gorgeous young lass, who is not too picky about the company she keeps)?

Durão December 16, 2010 at 12:45 pm

My favourite book is a very known one: Crime and Punishment.
It's dark, strong, brutal and brilliantly written.
Read it twice, hope to read it 10 more times until the day I die!
One of the greatest masterpieces humanity will ever see!

Ryan December 16, 2010 at 12:46 pm

Luckily it's written in English FishHawk, what would yer wife say if a gorgeous young Scots lass in a tartan miniskirt turned up at your door??

FishHawk December 16, 2010 at 1:28 pm

Good point.

The Retired One December 16, 2010 at 2:49 pm

Naquillity December 16, 2010 at 2:54 pm

oh, this is difficult. i love so many books. i'm currently reading The Bodies Left Behind by Jeffery Deaver who is one of my favorite authors besides Stephen King. i've also read several Oprah Book Club books and liked them. but, one book that is quite memorable to me is The Bondwoman's Narrative by Hannah Crafts. it's a book supposedly written by Hannah who was a slave. very good read if you'd like to check it out sometime. hope all is well. have a great day.

Hi retired one, hi Naq. I know it's difficult to pick one favorite, maybe I should have asked for a top ten lol.

clairew137 December 16, 2010 at 9:40 pm

Goodnight Beautiful by Dorothy Koomson. It has me crying every time.

Tulsa Gentleman December 16, 2010 at 11:45 pm

This Santa lives in Tulsa. My story is that the elves do all the work anyway and I just show up to drive the sleigh. I was the prime time Santa for Tulsa's largest shopping mall for 6 seasons. I have retired from that but still do Santa for some charities. It is good to be Santa but 6 hours a day, 6 days a week, for the 6 weeks before Christmas can be tough. The kids are fun but can beat you up in their enthusiasm. You learn early to wear a cup.

Ryan December 17, 2010 at 12:12 am

Nice one Claire.
The cup – worn by professional sportsmen and Santa claus lol.

Janet December 17, 2010 at 3:04 am

Top ten and I would have stood a chance of choosing – I have a stack that is reaching about the height of my mattress and frequently tumbles over. I'd love to add "The Familiar" to that pile.
Janet in darkest rural Nova Scotia

Ryan December 17, 2010 at 3:17 am

Hi Janet how is chilly Canada?

Grass December 17, 2010 at 5:09 am

I can feel the spirit of Christmas is getting nearer…….:-)

Linda December 17, 2010 at 7:07 am

I won't enter, because I'm hoping for some books for Christmas and I have to make some room to fit them in!

But just to say – don't ever depend on satnav to get you anywhere in Dunfermline. The town is a Bermuda Triangle as far as Mrs Satnav lady is concerned.

labazs December 17, 2010 at 10:07 am

The Wilderness by Samantha Harvey – my dad suffered from Alzheimers and that and Dementia are now becoming so prevalent, that this gives one a glimpse into what the sufferer may be trying to deal with so, hopefully, will help us to deal better and in a kinder way with these problems.

karen December 20, 2010 at 7:42 pm

My favourite book has to be Angela's Ashes!!! When reading a book that can make you cry, then you know if your reading a good book.
